Mayor Rodolfo Ziberna, in his capacity as president of the Corinini Cronberg Foundation, was sentenced to 1 year and 10 months in prison, and the five members of the institution’s curatorship were sentenced to 1 year and 4 months each. This is the sentence of first degree at the end of the trial for the death of Stefano Borghes, the 13-year-old boy, who died falling into the well in the Coronini Cronberg park, in Gorizia, on 22 July 2020. Everyone obtained generic mitigating circumstances, conditional suspension of the sentence and non-mentioning.
Judge Cristina Arban also established a sentence of 2 months of arrest for all six defendants for violation of the anti-accident legislation, in addition to the payment of court costs. The members of the Curatorium they were also sentenced to compensation of the damage to the civil parties, with an immediately enforceable provision of 100 thousand euros each for Stefano’s parents and 40 thousand euros for his younger sister. The return of the area of the Coronini-Cronberg park currently under seizure was also ordered.
The sentence
The sentence was pronounced after an hour and a half of deliberation, in an atmosphere of palpable tension. Among those present in the courtroom were the parents of Stefano Borghes, who remained calmly immobile during the reading of the sentence. After reading, the mother thanked the prosecutor with a hug, only melting at that moment. Mayor Ziberna said he accepted the sentence, but announced plans to appeal, saying he believed there should have been an acquittal. Defense lawyers underlined the reduction of the prosecutor’s requests and confirmed their intention to appeal.
