CREAM – Gianpietro Maccalli threw in the towel, closing the historic Treccia d’Oro pastry shop. A story that ends after 70 years: it was 1954 his father, Vittorio, raised the shutters in Piazza Garibaldi for the first time. Three generations of Crema people have bought delicacies from him and his son, starting with the Treccia d’oro, a dessert whose origins date back to the 1930s. It seems that the recipe was proposed for the first time at a fair in Padua by the pastry chef Zironda, in whose business Maccalli then began to work as an apprentice. When the owner decided to retire, Vittorio took over, contributing to the fame of the dessert that gave the shop its name. A story that Maccalli, Knight since 1993, continued until 2021, the year of his death. And now the decision of his son Gianpietro, who informed the municipal administrators. «Difficulties in finding personnel, but also strictly personal reasons», the confirmation ofCouncilor for Commerce Franco Bordo who was at Maccalli’s yesterday. Just over a month ago, the owner started the search for a master pastry chef, in an attempt to strengthen the staff.
The shop is not for sale, nor the Treccia d’oro brand. As if wanting to leave the door open to a future generation of Maccalli, perhaps to his son, Vittorio’s grandson.
Since 2016, pastry making has been a historic activity, recognized by the Region. «In a now empty shop – continued Bordo – I met the owners who, saddened, informed me of the decision to close this glorious business».
The mayor, Fabio Bergamaschi, he added: “A beautiful, long story of local entrepreneurship that is coming to an end. A story that intersected with that of many customer families. As mayor I greet you with regret, but also with great respect for the work done.”
