Italian wine is worth 45 billion euros (direct and induced) and employs over 300 thousand workers. Vinitaly, a message for the economy

VERONA – Beyond the numbers, the balance of the 56th Vinitaly, which ended at Veronafiere, reaffirmed the determination of the ‘Italian System’ to defend the highest and most identifying values that this sector represents for the entire Italian agri-food sector.

Starting with the presence of the President of the Chamber, Lorenzo Fontana, to continue with an important participation of the government coordinated by the Department of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, led by Minister Francesco Lollobrigida, which saw the intervention of the President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni , the vice prime minister and minister of foreign affairs and international trade, Antonio Tajani, the ministers of Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, of culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, of tourism, Daniela Santanchè and of education and merit, Giuseppe Valditara.

“The research by Vinitaly-Unione Italiana Vini and Prometeia which we presented on the inaugural day had and has the aim of shining a light on the great transversal value that wine has for our country and for this I thank Masaf and the minister Lollobrigida for having contributed, also from an exhibition and communication point of view, to underlining the socio-economic impact of the wine sector”, comments the president of Veronafiere, Federico Bricolo.

The data from the study on wine in Italy highlighted an annual production of 45.2 billion euros (between direct, indirect and induced impact), 303 thousand employed and an added value of 17.4 billion euros equal to 1.1 % of GDP (sport, according to estimates by the Sports Credit Institute, is worth 1.3%). Without wine, the analysis shows, the trade balance of the agri-food sector would drop by 58% (from +12.3 to +5.1 billion euros in 2023). Wine tourism contributes substantially to the overall economic impact of the supply chain which, if it fuels the tourist economy of large cities “on the margin”, can become fundamental (even beyond the strictly economic effects) for many small towns and rural communities with a winemaking vocation. According to the findings of the Città del Vino Association, wine tourism annually involves around 15 million people (including travelers and excursionists) with daily budgets (124 euros) 13% higher than those of the average tourist, for a total expenditure of 2.6 billion euros.

It is no coincidence that this year Masaf proposed to the operators present at Vinitaly (97 thousand of which 30,070 foreign from 140 nations, equal to 31% of the total) a new space created in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, with an experience immersive among multimedia installations, ancient writings and works of art. The exhibition “Wine between myth and culture” hosted artistic products coming both from the Torgiano Wine Museum of the Lungarotti Foundation and from various Italian museums, the latter thanks to the contribution of Generali, but also historical documents. Among the masterpieces present, it was possible to admire “The Wedding at Cana” by Garofalo, “Bacchus” by Annibale Carracci, “The Harvest (allegory of Autumn)” by Francesco Celebrano, “Bacchanal” by Pablo Picasso, the “Statue of Satyr” in marble from the 1st century BC, clay wine amphorae from the 4th century BC to the 4th century AD and much more. Together with the exhibition, visitors can experience the immersive “Divine” arena, a fascinating journey through microscopic images and creative visualizations for a video experience on the territory and wine of Italy.
