Turin, two acts of vandalism in one month against the Qubi, botanical garden on Lungo Dora

Two acts of vandalism in one month. This time, however, there is also the theft of lights and photovoltaic panels, damage of around 2 thousand euros. We are on long Doraa stone’s throw from the nightlife area of young university students Borgo Rossinithis is where the Qubi Gardena garden furnished with wooden boxes to cultivate a vegetable garden raised from the ground.

The Qubi Garden association, which is based in Via Parma 75, stipulated a collaboration agreement 3 years ago with District 7 of the City of Turin for the care and maintenance of the green area. It was born, therefore, an outdoor gathering place where to spend time, eat and grow some plants.

For two weeks, the association’s volunteers had also installed lights to illuminate the area in the evening hours. On the night between Tuesday 30 April and Wednesday 1 MayHowever, some criminals ruined everything.

«They stole our lights – tells Margherita pizza Frari, one of the leaders of the association – we financed ourselves for 6 months to be able to put them up, it’s a big problem. They took everything away: lights and solar panels, we are around 2 thousand euros in damage. You work for months and then in an instant someone comes by and ruins everything.”

The thieves also knocked over one of the planters that contains the raised garden. «When we saw the box on the ground – continues Frari – we thought of a drunk, someone who had drunk too many spritzes but the one who comes here and steals the lights is a more organized person, not someone who has drunk too much. We thought that with night lighting people would no longer want to make a mess but instead…. ».

This is the second episode in a very short time. The March 29 something similar had happened: someone had overturned the wooden box containing the vegetable herbs.

«I’m sorry about the plans, – continues Frari – but let’s say I spend 50 euros and put the box back in order. The lights, however, took months to work on. The fact is that we are truly on our own, the Municipality makes you a collaboration agreement but then doesn’t support you in anything. It’s all really just the result of people’s good will and if it is destroyed several times, today’s incident is the second episode of vandalism in a few weeks, it goes away after a while. On Thursday we will lift the box and try to write to the Municipality for help.”
