Sestri Levante, Municipality: honorary citizenship for Retegui is postponed, a practice considered non-urgent

Honorary citizenship in Retegui and the port walkway were at the center of a controversial session of the Sestri Levante city council, which was quickly closed. The motion of Marco Conti (Brothers of Italy) e Diego Pistachios (Sestriamo/Forza Italia) for the honor to the center forward of the national team and Genoa, who has a great-grandfather originally from Sestri Levante, was not discussed. “The president of the city council – the two claim – prevented the discussion of the motion for the granting of honorary citizenship to the national team’s center forward, Retegui, not recognizing its urgency and going so far as to justify the choice also with incomprehensible issues of equal conditions in view of the elections. Maybe he didn’t understand that Retegui will play to help Italy win the European Football Championships, he won’t be a candidate for the European Championships. But the most serious thing, here aside from the jokes, is that he has ordered us proponents not to speak to the press again before the measures are discussed “by the government majority”.

Once the Retegui issue was resolved, the majority approved an agenda, alternative to the motion presented by the minority council group on the issue of the walkway of the port of Sestri Levante, which involves the mayor Francesco Solinas and the council to “proceed with the safety of the intact portions of the walkway and the removal of the sections of walkway damaged by the sea; start as soon as possible the technical-economic feasibility planning for the expansion of the road towards the port starting after the Adua pier and also including the pedestrian crossing on the sea side in continuation of the current promenade; to seek the resources necessary for the widening of the road towards the port with the inclusion of the seaside promenade in continuation of the current one”.

A note from the Municipality explains: “The pedestrian walkway along Via Pilade Queirolo which leads to the port of Sestri Levante, despite being pleasant over the years, has proven to be extremely fragile. For the latest serious damage that occurred following the storm of 3 and 5 November, the Municipal Administration immediately instructed the competent offices to develop a project for its restoration and to guarantee the safety of residents and tourists, especially in view of the next summer season. Repairing and putting the entire damaged section back into service means spending a few tens of thousands of euros to have a structure once again exposed to the force of the sea and which could therefore be damaged again during the next marine event such as those of last November or 2018″. So alongside the immediate restoration activities, the council is studying “a project to widen the roadway and protect it from the sea through the positioning of rocks that can continue the work of road network of the promenade up to the Adua pier with a two-lane road and the seaside walk”.

The majority’s choice is rejected by Accounts And Pistachios, because it determines “the widening of the road towards the port, widening the existing lanes with more concrete and asphalt, with the addition of a pedestrian walkway. In the meantime, that is, for who knows how many years, Sestri remains without a walkway: the unsafe piece would be knocked down, leaving the least damaged stump standing, pedestrians would be forced to cross twice to pass from the side of the peninsula, on a pavement that is not up to standard , not accessible to disabled people and very dangerous. An unworthy “tapullo”, the worst solution for security, for access to the port and all the activities that involve it and for the image of Sestri”.
