Firefighters from Colorado’s South Metro Fire Rescue (SMFR) had just responded to a serious car accident on a busy interstate. While they were working on the vehicles and the paramedics were taking care of the patients, an unexpected hero appeared, eager to help: “A cat appeared at the scene of the accident and the safety officer tried to explain to him that humans had the situation under control, but the cat was still determined to help”, the Smfr wrote jokingly on Facebook.

The stray cat was wandering around the scene of the accident and, after receiving pats on the head from the firefighters, approached an ambulance: “He got into the back, but the firefighters paramedics had more medical training and the patient he didn’t need feline support – they write amusedly on the Smfr social media page -. So he decided to drive the ambulance to the hospital and, although the boss liked his proposal, driving probably wasn’t the best idea either.”

Irony aside, as grateful as they were for the cat’s help, the firefighters knew that its presence on the highway was unsafe. So they carefully took him, put him in a carrier and placed him in one of their vehicles, where he could stay warm. Once the accident scene was cleared, workers picked up the cat and took him to the Dumb Friends League (DFL) in nearby Castle Rock, hoping he would soon find a forever home.

Two weeks later, however, a familiar face walked through the shelter’s doors in search of the brave cat. It was firefighter Andrew Becker who, after meeting him at the accident site, couldn’t stop thinking about him: “I knew I wanted to take this cat home with me.” The man was eager to reunite with the cat, who he named Hazi in honor of his help on the hazmat team. And so he showed up with his family at the shelter: as soon as he saw him, the cat showed all his happiness by going straight into his arms.

After signing the adoption papers, Becker and Hazi said goodbye to their DFL friends and set off on their new adventure together. Since then the cat has settled perfectly into his new home, where he is constantly cuddled or plays with his mother, father and siblings. And, of course, he remains alert for any crises at home that might require a helping hand. Since then, at least, the hero cat has no longer intervened in road accidents, but he will always be remembered by SMFR as the best feline first responder in the area and the sweetest boy ever.
