Almost two weeks after the terrible accident at the Tour of the Basque Country, Jonas Vingegaard reappeared in public through his Team’s social media accounts: “I’m leaving the hospital” he said, showing himself with his right arm immobilized due to a broken collarbone, “it’s time to begin rehabilitation”
Jonas Vingegaard he returned to appear in public two weeks after the frightening accident at the Tour of the Basque Country where he risked his life together with 11 other cyclists. The Danish champion was discharged on the morning of Tuesday 16 April and will continue rehabilitation in his home country where checks and monitoring will continue while waiting to know the real recovery times. Thus ends the mystery surrounding the conditions of the winner of the last two Tours de France, which had also worried the 27-year-old’s parents.
Last April 4, Jonas Vingegaard on a cursed curve during a descent, together with a dozen other runners (including Roglic and Evenepoel) he ended up disastrously off the road, hitting a concrete culvert and near some boulders. Dramatic moments both for the Dane and for the other fallen with devastating consequences: Roglic was “saved” with a series of multiple abrasions and cuts that marked his body, while for Evenepoel the verdict was a fractured scapula. Things went worse for Vingegaard, who remained on the ground for a long time: multiple fractures and pneumothorax for him.
The last image we had of Vingegaard from that day was of the Danish champion lying immobilized on a stretcher with the oxygen tank alongside and loaded into an ambulance. From that moment on, a pall of mystery and silence descended on his physical condition which aroused even more than simple apprehensions. Even the parents, who remained in Denmark, had confirmed that they had no first-hand information on their son’s health, alarming many. There was talk of a first operation, on the shoulder, then a second for the pneumothorax and the consequent hospitalization in intensive care.

Voices never certified and on which the Vingegaard team, Visma | Rease a Bike brought about total silence: even today it is not known for sure whether there were two operations and in what condition the Dane arrived at the hospital. The only comforting news is that he never lost consciousness and that he has now finally left the Basque hospital to return home to Denmark. “Hi everyone, it’s time to leave the hospital. I want to thank all the medical staff for taking care of me. And I want to thank everyone for the enormous support.” he announced through Visma’s official channels. “I have received many messages, thoughts and drawings. Now it’s time to start rehabilitation.”
Vingegaard’s injury at the Tour of the Basque Country and recovery times
Jonas Vingegaard was among the most traumatized by the terrible fall at the Tour of the Basque Country on April 4th. Along with the Dane, Quinn, Vine and Crass also suffered the worst, all of whom were rushed to hospital. For the Tour winner there was talk of a fractured sternum and scapula but above all a collapsed lung and pneumothorax. Now Vingegaard appeared smiling on social media with his shoulder still blocked by the fracture but in full recovery. As for when he will return to racing, it is currently too early to know: he certainly won’t take part in the Tour de France in Julywhere he will not be able to look for the historic consecutive three-peat.
