Being interrogated as soon as possible: this is the priority of the president of Liguria Giovanni Toti, who has been under house arrest since May 7 on charges of corruption. According to the Genoa Prosecutor’s Office, he accepted and received just over 74 thousand euros from entrepreneurs Aldo and Roberto Spinelli as funding for his Committee in exchange for practices in favor of the interests of the Group which operates in the port logistics sector. The governor, who made use of the right not to answer before the investigating judge, in his home in Ameglia, in the province of La Spezia, is waiting to be summoned by the Genoese prosecutors to clarify and also reply to Spinelli himself.
The wait for the interrogation
“Before anything else we await the interrogation. For now, no re-examination,” said Toti’s lawyer, Stefano Savi. But at the moment there is no date yet, even if time is running out and we are talking about next week. Meanwhile, Rino Canavese has been summoned, the only one who opposed the resolution for the thirty-year concession of the Rinfuse terminal to the Spinelli. Then it will be the turn of the other two members of the port’s board, Giorgio Carozzi and Andrea la Mattina, who, despite the initial opposition, later changed their minds.
Toti’s position
Toti will have to explain the amount of interceptions and the reason for a series of speeded up and approved practices, the meaning of those meetings on Aldo Spinelli’s yacht, the Leila. For the prosecution, their relationship was based on a do ut des and not one-way as the entrepreneur would have said, claiming that it was the governor who was constantly looking for him, without having “done anything for me”, including the transformation of the Punta dell’Olmo beach. Toti will give his version, as the prosecutors write, about the “pressure from the Spinellis” and his requests “for a hand”. And then on a series of episodes that the investigation documents reconstruct in a way that is opposite to the defensive line of the 84-year-old “self made man” who slowly achieved success and also the presidency of Genoa and Livorno. An entrepreneur who, as he himself said, “gave money to everyone” by providing financing to anyone who asked for it. And that, as the papers say, he would have corrupted, with money and other benefits, such as five-star stays in Monte Carlo, the former president of the port Paolo Emilio Signorini (who ended up in prison and now no longer has any powers or salary from Iren ). And who, again, for his “speculative” purposes also made the transfers to the Toti Committee.
