the minority asks for “extraordinary and urgent” advice

CROTONE An “extraordinary and urgent” convocation of the Crotone municipal council has been requested to discuss the reclamation issue. The request, sent to the Prime Minister, to the general secretary of the body and for information to the mayor, was formalized this morning with a document signed by twelve opposition municipal councilors (Salvatore Riga, Anna Maria Cantafora, Carmen Giancotti, Fabrizio Meo, Andrea Devona, Andrea Tesoriere, Maria Luana Cavallo, Giuseppe Fiorino, Enrico Pedace, Alessia Lerose, Antonio and Fabio Manica). The signatures of Fabiola Marrelli and Danilo Arcuri are missing from the opposition representatives. The request to sign had also been made to them. The twelve opposition councilors they explicitly ask that the extraordinary commissioner for reclamation, Emilio Errigo, also be present at the Council meeting. The idea of the applicants is to avoid the possibility of expressing a favorable opinion on the disposal in Crotone (Columbra landfill) of the poisons present in the industrial area. In essence they ask for compliance with the agreements signed at the decision-making Services Conference of 24 October 2019, which provide for the transport and disposal outside the regional territory of Calabria of the poisons present in Crotone. A decision on which the health-environmental situation experienced in the Pythagorean city had a specific weight. It was not decided to transport the poisons to other sites out of selfish reasons. In Crotone there is objectively a complex situation which, unfortunately, has a heavy impact on mortality cases due to cancer. It is not the first time that the city council has spoken out against Eni’s plan to dispose of the poisons in Crotone. Already on February 1, 2023, the city council had expressed itself unanimously against one of the many proposals put forward by the industrial giant to not comply with the decisions taken on October 24, 2019. The city council meeting of last February 1 was was called precisely to foil the plan to authorize a purpose-built landfill within the industrial site of the former southern Pertusola. On 9 February 2023, a services conference was held, requested by Eni, which confirmed the no to the project to create the purpose-built landfill. If the project had been successful, the poisons would have been moved a hundred meters: from the landfill facing the sea to the industrial site of the former Pertusola. The no was then confirmed, during the services conference on 9 February, by the Calabria Region, the Municipality and the Province of Crotone. Up to now the three entities have marched together. On the occasion of the conference of 9 February 2023, the Calabrian regional council, on the initiative of the PD council group, also unanimously approved an agenda to prevent Eni from obtaining consent and saving a boatload of money on the skin of a territory that has already paid a very high price. The fear that on May 3rd the activity implemented by Eni could be successful is very strong in Crotone. Just as the desire to avoid mockery is very strong. This is the reason that pushed citizens, associations and parties to set up movements and fighting committees that do not display flags. Among the activities implemented is the collection of signatures. An online and in-person collection is underway. The data on the report, at the moment, say that there is participation. The only negative element of all these activities is represented by the fact that the forces in the field, despite having a common objective, proceed in no particular order. This aspect could also have some negative repercussions.
