The “Mida” operation conducted by the Ivrea carabinieri together with colleagues from Chivasso, Venaria Reale, Vercelli and Volpiano led to the execution of six precautionary measures against as many people under investigation for receiving stolen goods.
The investigation was started in February 2023 and made it possible to put an end to a complex system of receiving large quantities of gold from illicit activities. A key figure is that of an 86-year-old man, already known to the police for his criminal past: he had set up a thriving market in stolen gold with the complicity of a group of people.
The old man frequently went to the nomadic camps of Ivrea, Chivasso and Verolengo to evaluate, qualify and quantify the gold jewels that were shown to him. Once he acquired the precious items, he received them from compliant gold buyers in the province of Turin.
In the home of the “God of gold”, the military recovered a precision scale, a gold inspection stone, a magnifying glass and two vials of reagent acid for gold, while at the homes of other suspects they 5 two-way radios were found, 3,700 euros in cash, a ring sizer, a money counting machine, various gold jewelery with a total weight of 33 grams, a fake gas technician’s tag and adhesive letters for car license plates. Furthermore, 566 grams of gold were recovered.
The 86-year-old ringleader was subjected to house arrest, five other accomplices were subjected to the obligation to remain at home and three others were reported to be in a state of freedom for receiving stolen goods.
