“Putting a ceiling on the presence of foreign children in our school classes is the latest unfortunate exit from the Deputy Prime Minister of this intolerant Government. Matteo Salvini, in addition to not knowing our Constitution, has no idea what integration and the right to education mean. As if he were proposing that emergency rooms treat a maximum percentage of foreigners. And it is not surprising that for every bizarre proposal that comes from representatives of this Government, the President of the Republic must intervene to correct free words, such as those expressed against the Pioltello school, which received compliments from Colle. We can understand the electoral climate of the next European elections and also Salvini’s difficulty within his party, but language and proposals that are outside of any democratic principle can no longer be tolerated. We need to deal with different cultures, especially in a school environment, to raise our children in a multicultural dimension, where it is possible to increase critical thinking and fight inequalities, a hall for democracy and personal growth. Salvini and his government would do well to focus on the new forms of poverty, to recognize the rights of minorities and above all to think before speaking.”
