Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Ubisoft condemns the attacks received by the development team

Yves Guillemot, the CEO of Ubisoft, has expressed the company’s position on Attacks Received by Assassin’s Creed Shadows Developers due to the choice of one of the protagonists, the black samurai Yasuke.

Since the very first chapters, many players have been asking for an Assassin’s Creed set in feudal Japan. When Assassin’s Creed Shadows was presented, many did not welcome the presence of a black man in the main character pair, even though he had historically existed.

Guillemot’s position

There was no shortage of criticism and controversy and many have gone too far, inventing conspiracies and directly offending the developers, even encouraged by people like Elon Musk, who took advantage of the situation to lash out against DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion). The first to respond was Ubisoft’s executive producer, Marc-Alexis Côté, according to whom comments like Musk’s “fuel hatred”. Now even the company’s top brass, the aforementioned Yves Guillemot, have taken a stand.

“One thing that concerns me right now is the malicious and personal online attacks that have been aimed at some of our team members and our partners,” Guillemot said in an interview on the company’s blog. “I want to underline that We at Ubisoft condemn these acts of hate in the strongest possible termsand I encourage the rest of the industry and gamers to call them out as well. I am proud to support the amazing work of our teams and partners, and will always trust their creative choices. We should all celebrate the hard work and talent that goes into making games.”

It should be underlined that Guillemot does not directly mention Assassin’s Creed Shadows in the interview, but the reference, given recent events, should be quite clear.
