Galaxy S25, historic turning point coming? Samsung could “divorce” from Qualcomm

The latest leaks on the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra camera seem to have convinced fans of the Suwon giant. Now, however, we are back to talking about next year’s top-of-the-range Korean models, especially with regards to their technical specifications. In fact it seems that Samsung is considering a MediaTek SoC for its new flagships.

If confirmed, the news would be incredible: traditionally, Samsung uses two SoCs for its Galaxy S, one from the Exynos line (produced by Samsung itself) and one from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon series. According to the latest reports, this year Samsung will focus heavily on the Exynos 2500, which will once again return under the Galaxy S25 and S25+while Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen4 will be used as the SoC for some versions of the Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S25+, as well as for all Galaxy S25 Ultras arriving next year.

Now, however, the Korean Financial News portal shuffles the cards on the table: it seems that, alongside its Exynos 2500, Samsung could opt for a Dimensity chip from MediaTek, instead of a Snapdragon 8 Gen4 from Qualcomm. But why should the Suwon giant turn to MediaTek, abandoning a consolidated partner like the San Diego company? The reasons would be different, but the main one would concern i smartphone prices of new generation.

In particular, it seems that the Snapdragon 8 Gen4 will cost more than the models that preceded it: specifically, the new generation SoC will have a 25-30% higher price compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen3. This should also cause a chain increase in the final price of smartphones that will use the Qualcomm chip: considering the already rather high costs of the Galaxy S line devices, it is understandable that Samsung wants to avoid further price increases turning to MediaTek instead of Qualcomm.

In any case, i Dimensity chips could be used in China, in Korea and other Asian markets, where they would replace Qualcomm’s SoCs on the Galaxy S25, S25+ and S25 Ultra. Instead, in Europe and the United States we can expect Samsung to continue to prefer its proprietary chips, at least on the two models entry-level. However, it remains to be understood which SoC will mount the Galaxy S25 Ultra on the European and North American markets: is it possible that Qualcomm is really out of the picture?
