The House of Monaco has finally revealed photos and official characteristics of the latest generation of the BMW M5, known by the project name G90. The new M5 inaugurates a totally new chapter for this famous E-segment sedan with a super sporty character: not only from a stylistic point of view, but above all with regards to a superlative technical and technological package that embraces electrification for the first time.

New BMW M5, the design

Before talking about its incredible speed performance, we can only focus on the design of this muscular, yet exuberant, long sedan. over five metres and almost two meters wide (1.97 metres). The aggressiveness of this car is enhanced by its molded sides and the front end which sports the glossy black kidney grille that is almost completely closed to offer better aerodynamics. Speaking of aerodynamics, there is no shortage of miniskirts, a front splitter (lapped by air intakes), a large air extractor, where the four exhausts are incorporated (each 100 millimeters in diameter) and a splitter on the tail, all rigorously in black to enhance its shapes. The alloy wheels complete the scenic (and sporty) effect 20 inches to the front and from 21 at the rear, wrapped in tires measuring 285/40 ZR20 up front and 295/35 ZR21 at the rear. Worthy of note is the Panoramic glass roof offered as standard, while optional, we find the carbon one, 30 kilos lighter (carbon package).

Interior

Looking at the passenger compartment you can appreciate the perfect and classic mix between luxury and sportiness, where the highly containment seats covered in leather stand out, the steering wheel with crown cut in the lower part and many other details with a “racing” character, offered as standard and available a practically endless list of options. Music lovers will also appreciate the sound system Bowers Wilkins with 18 speakers, also offered as standard. The dashboard layout is the one already known on the latest 5 Series and includes digital instrumentation with a display 12.3 inches and a 14.9-inch central screen capable of displaying the numerous functions offered by the BMW Operating System 8.5, with graphics specific to the M5. Furthermore, the head up display which projects driving information directly onto the windscreen could not be missing.

Motor

The good 2.5 tons of the car are driven by a powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain which combines a classic 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 with a permanent magnet synchronous electric unit, for a total power of 727 HP and 1,000 Nm of torque. The declared performance speaks of a 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds and a maximum speed of 250 km/h which, on request, can be increased to 305 km/h as an option. Power and torque are unloaded onto the four-wheel drive (with the possibility of privileging the rear axle more) through the use of an 8-speed automatic transmission. As for the driving modes we find: Hybrid, Electric and eControl, but optional it is possible to add the Dynamic and Dynamic Plus modes for the track. Being a plug-in we find a battery with a net capacity of 18.6 kWh, a declared autonomy in 100% electric mode of 69km and maximum alternating current charging of 7.4 kW. We also point out the presence of the adaptive M chassis and the rear steering with a steering angle of up to 1.5 degrees.
