Last night, Apple released the second beta of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 for developers, introducing new features and improving the interface.

What’s new in iOS 18 beta 2

1. iPhone Mirroring

One of the coolest additions is the iPhone mirroring feature, available when paired with a Mac with macOS Sequoia beta 2. This feature allows us to control our iPhone directly from the Mac, even when the iPhone is locked. We can open apps, manage notifications and more, all from our computer. However, the feature will not be available in Europe, at least initially.

2. RCS switch

iOS 18 beta 2 introduces a toggle for the RCS messaging protocol, which will replace SMS and MMS. While not yet functional at the moment, RCS will improve conversations with Android users by supporting high-quality images and videos, reading receipts, typing indicators, and more. This function it is currently only visible to iPhone users in the United States with carriers that support RCS such as T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T.

3. Changes to the Home Screen

The Home screen receives some changes, such as the App Store icon in dark mode it’s a new background hue switch. However, these new features may be unstable and may require you to restart your iPhone to work properly.

4. New Widgets

A new widget called Wallet connected cards has been added, although it is not yet functional at the moment. This widget should integrate with the Wallet app to show your total card balance and transaction history.

5. Password App

In the Password app, a “+” button has been added to the main view, making it easy to add new items without having to navigate to other sections.

6. Control Center

The power button in Control Center now offers more pronounced haptic feedback and requires a press to activate, reducing the risk of accidental activation.

7. Changes for the EU

In Europe, iPadOS 18 now supports alternative app stores and downloading apps from websites, in line with the regulations of the European Commission. These changes were introduced for iPhone with iOS 17.4 and are now extended to iPads.
