On the occasion of the Pokémon GO Fest in Madrid, the well-known newspaper Eurogamer had the opportunity to interview Michael Steranka, the game director of Pokémon GO. One of the main topics of this interview was the avatar update, the first part of the biggest update called Rediscovering Pokémon GOwhich sparked several negative reactions from Niantic’s vast mobile gaming community.
Michael Steranka’s statements
Responding to players dissatisfied with this update, Steranka stated the following:
“We definitely received a lot of feedback that players felt the game still wasn’t what they were hoping for. The team has worked hard to look into that feedback, and we’ve already made some updates and changes, things like improving the different body proportions it can have and different skin tones. But I would say it’s just the beginning, we want to continue adding more to the feature, making it more diverse. My goal is for every single player in the world to truly feel like they can be represented in Pokémon GO.“
“The other thing I’d like to share on that front is how technically challenging it was for us to bring that functionality to market because we have this backlog of different objects and items for avatars and clothes and poses, and these were all designed for two form factors very specific. Taking those dozens and hundreds of avatar objects and applying them to much more customizable characters was very, very complicated for us. But we’ve seen the feedback and have already made some changes and have more on the way.“
According to the game director’s statements, therefore, it seems that several small improvements have already been made to the new avatarwaiting for further updates to come.
