This decision was revealed in advance at 9to5Googlebut in one Pixel smartphone support page a notice has appeared highlighting the gradual closure of VPN by Google One in 2024. Pixel owners, however, will be able to continue to have access to the service via the VPN integrated into the smartphone at no additional cost.

Google explained to the portal 9to5Google that they made this decision because they discovered that users were not using VPN. For this reason they sanctioned the elimination of the service to allow the team to concentrate work on the most requested functions of Google One.

The VPN from the American company does not allow you to choose the server connection location, reducing options for users including bypassing geo-restrictions to access content blocked in certain regions. The service in Google smartphones was introduced in 2022 to coincide with the presentation of the hardware in question, while the birth of the function occurred in October 2020.
