The results obtained today in Štrbské Pleso will go to the archives: 85th place in the final stage of Okolo Slovenska and 93rd place in the final classification. To the archives, but to history goes the palmarès of a great champion like Peter Sagan. While the Tour de France started for the first time since 2012 without him, the great Slovakian cyclist has definitively closed his road career.

Here is the message that Sagan entrusted to social media to greet his world: «After so many years of road racing, it is hard to believe that my journey in professional racing has come to an end. Today, crossing the finish line at @okoloslovenska was a moment full of mixed emotions: sadness, nostalgia, but also pride and joy. It’s a bittersweet feeling to close this chapter of my professional career, but I couldn’t have imagined a more perfect place to do it than here, in my hometown and at my home race.

I still remember my first stage at the Tour Down Under on January 19, 2010. I was just a kid, not even 20 years old, and I never imagined back then that I would have such a long and fruitful career in this sport. It has been a long road, with its ups and downs, and finishing my road racing career at the Tour of Slovakia, surrounded by the support and love of my fellow Slovaks, is a memory I will cherish forever.

Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this incredible journey. Your support has been my driving force and I am so grateful for every smile, every encouragement and every shared moment. I couldn’t have gotten to this point without you.”
