On the eve of Wimbledon, the attention of the tennis world is focused on Novak Djokovic and his amazing recovery after meniscus surgery. Mats Wilanderformer Swedish champion, shared his reflections on the Serbian’s greatness and his speedy recovery.
Wilander compared Djokovic to his historic rivals, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, noting how Nole’s greatness was initially less evident: “I think when Nole came on the tour, we didn’t see his greatness right away because it was more inside him than outside. In Roger and Rafa, you could see the greatness in the shot, in the technique. Everyone wants to play like Roger. Novak hits the ball like most other pros, except he hits his backhand like the best and his forehand like the best.”

The former number one highlighted the lack of weaknesses in Djokovic’s game on any surface, a trait that distinguishes him from Federer and Nadal. This completeness, combined with an exceptional physique, has allowed the Serb to win 24 Grand Slam titles.

Wilander said he was surprised to see Djokovic in London just before Wimbledon, stressing that this is his greatness: “He’s not looking for the No. 1 ranking, he’s not looking for the most Grand Slam titles, he’s looking for the day-to-day situation. And I think he feels he has to go to Wimbledon to get into that competitive spirit.”

The former Swedish champion also explained the importance of Wimbledon for Djokovic in view of the Paris Olympics: “Whether he is preparing to play or not, I don’t know, but he is preparing to be part of the tournament. Even if he doesn’t play, it will help him become a better player. It will help him come back earlier to be completely ready to play in the Olympics.”
