The Australian from McLaren, third on the grid, made the most of the close battle between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, seizing his opportunity and overtaking his British teammate but then failing to worry the Dutchman from Red Bull for victory.

The 23-year-old native of Melbourne responded thus immediately post-Sprint to those who asked him if he was satisfied with the result: “Yes and no. I finished in a better position than the starting position, but from the second half of the race onwards I didn’t have enough pace. I thought I had a chance to pass Max, but something was missing. There is something to examine for qualifying and then for tomorrow, but we take home a good haul of points compared to the other teams fighting with us.”

On the overtaking maneuver on teammate Norris, which was ultimately decisive for second place:I saw that they were fighting up front and I knew there would be an opportunity coming out of Turn 4.
