Max Verstappen completes free practice in first position. The Red Bull Ring circuit hosts the first and only free practice session of the Austrian Grand Prix. The special programming of the sprint race provides only sixty minutes to adapt to the circuit. The short window of time is exploited in the best possible way by teams and drivers, who focus on race simulation. Brief alarm at Red Bull, with Max Verstappen stopped on the track due to an electrical problem. The red flag was waved on the Austrian track, with the RB20 soon being brought back to the pits and restarted in a short time. At the end the drivers engage in fast laps, with Verstappen gaining the upper hand over his rivals. At Mercedes, however, they continue with the race pace simulation until the checkered flag, thus not providing data for this afternoon’s qualifying.
