In his career Garrido has coached Villarreal, Club Bruges and Betis among others. He won an Egyptian Super Cup at the helm of Al-Ahly, a Moroccan Cup with Raja Casablanca and two CAF Confederation Cups with the same clubs. The Spaniard has outsprinted Mazzarri in the race to become the new manager of Persepolis. With the former Napoli player Davide Ballardini and Gennaro Gattuso also ended up on the list of possible names for the Tehran club’s bench. In the end the tricolor did not prevail, with Persepolis deciding to entrust their bench to the Spaniard Garrido.
