F1 Spain: Ferrari flies in free practice 3, Sainz precedes Norris and Leclerc

Carlos Sainz junior’s Ferrari is ahead of everyone in the free practice 3 classification of the Spanish GP. The Ferrari Spaniard in 1’13″013 preceded the McLaren of Lando Norris and the second red of Charles Leclerc. Fourth time for the Red Bull of Max Verstappen, but what is striking is the very narrow gap between the protagonists: the first 4 they are contained in just 74 thousandths and therefore it promises to be a very tight qualification and not to be missed at 4pm.

Mercedes also wants to be in the game because George Russell is fifth just over a tenth behind Sainz, with Lewis Hamilton sixth at 3 tenths. Seventh time for Sergio Perez’s second Red Bull ahead of Albon’s Williams, Alonso’s Aston Martin and Oscar Piastri’s second McLaren. Eleventh and twelfth place for the two Alpines of Ocon and Gasly, while the Racing Bulls of Ricciardo (16th) and Tsunoda (18th) are still behind. Two contacts between Hamilton and Stroll and Leclerc and Norris at the end of the session are under investigation.

mclaren fire

Of note shortly before the start of the session was the intervention of the firefighters to put out a fire that broke out in the McLaren hospitality area, probably due to a short circuit. The heat developed large smoke which forced all personnel to evacuate and intoxicated a couple of firefighters who were not equipped with protective masks (they were taken for precautionary observation). The fire broke out between the two floors of the structure and was quickly put out.
