Alonso at the 21st Montmeló
More than 11 years have passed since Fernando’s last success Alonso in F1. It was May 12, 2013 when the then Ferrari driver took home the Spanish Grand Prix, rejoicing in front of his fans. He certainly could not have imagined that it would be his last victory in over a decade, but Alonso has proven to be a highlander which will bide its time until 2026.
On Sunday the two-time world champion will embrace his fans at Montmeló for the 21st time in his career: an event for which Alonso, despite Aston Martin’s lack of competitiveness, does not want to give up dreaming.
Alonso’s words
“It is difficult to assess what can realistically be done. I think we can place ourselves between 8th and 12th place, which is our natural position this year“, the Spaniard said in an interview with the news agency EFE. “However, showing up at your home Grand Prix with all the fans in front and saying that you hope to finish tenth… in short, you always try to keep your hopes high. Those of the fans, yours and those of the team. So It’s normal to dream a little more, no? I hope to get a great result“.
“I have very fond memories here. Of course, winning at home is always more special than winning elsewhere. And the 32nd, in Barcelona, I remember very well. It was a race with many stops, a lot of tire degradation. Then, I managed to take the Spanish flag on the pit lap and it was a very emotional weekend“.
