Raul Fernandez and the options for 2025 – Rossomotori.it

Raul Fernandez still doesn’t know what his future will be for 2025 in MotoGP: returning to Moto2 certainly isn’t among the options

Raul Fernandez, should he find himself without a place in MotoGP next year, he ruled out the possibility of a return to Moto2 in 2025. The 2021 Moto2 runner-up has failed to replicate the success of the smaller categories since moving up to the premier class the following year. However, Fernandez showed improvement in the final races of the 2024 season.

Options within Aprilia

During the Catalan GP, Fernandez led the Sprint race before crashing, and the following day he managed a sixth place in the main race aboard the Trackhouse Racing Aprilia, after starting from the front row. These positive results come at a critical time, as the pilots market is in turmoil after Ducati’s decision to promote Marc Marquez to its factory team for 2025, quickly filling the available seats.

Inside the Aprilia team, there are three bikes available for 2025 after the signing of Maverick Vinales with KTM. This situation offers Fernandez several opportunities to remain with Trackhouse for next year as well. When asked if he would consider a return to Moto2 if offered, he clearly replied that it was not an option.

The return to MotoGP after Moto2

The returning to Moto2 and then back to MotoGP is a rarely practicable path with success. Few riders, since 2010 when Moto2 replaced the 250cc class, have managed to return to MotoGP after a period in the intermediate class.

Toni Elias, a MotoGP race winner, he returned to Moto2 in 2010 to win the title, before returning to MotoGP with LCR Honda in 2011. However, that was his last full season in the premier class, with a best result of eighth place. Alex De Angelis he made his MotoGP debut in 2008 from the 250cc class, spending two years there before returning to Moto2. He made some sporadic appearances in MotoGP before a full-time return in 2015 with Ioda Racing, but missed several races due to injuries. The most notable case is that of Aleix Espargarowho moved from MotoGP to Moto2 between 2010 and 2012.

The options for Raul Fernandez in 2025 however, they remain open. His recent performances have certainly caught the attention of teams, and his determination to stay in MotoGP suggests he is ready to fight for a competitive place.
