Søren Wærenskjold won the overall classification Tour of Belgium 2024. The 24-year-old Norwegian thus achieved a strong success, built on an excellent inaugural time trial and pursued through another four decidedly hard-fought days of racing, in particular due to a classification that remained very short and the numerous bonuses available to the riders in the span of the various stages. There Uno-X Mobility thus extending a particularly satisfying period: in the month of June alone, the Norwegian Professional won a stage at the Tour of the Dauphiné 2024the Brussels Classic 2024the Heistse Pijl 2024 and, with Wærenskjold, precisely one stage and the general of the Tour of Belgium 2024.
The Scandinavian saw final success hanging in the balance until the very last meters of the last stage. His closest rival in the standings, Mathias Vacek (Lidl-Trek) finished the last stage in fourth place, coming close to that 4″ bonus that would have put him on equal time in the general classification, after the same with Wærenskjold had taken a 3″ bonus in one of the three finishes of the Golden Kilometer: “I tried to win the first sprint and then the idea was to stay behind Vacek – the words of the winner collected by Wielerflits – However, he came very close to scoring bonuses in the final sprint. I was lucky, because three riders finished in front of him.”
Wærenskjold does not hide his happiness: “I am very happy with this victory. The team was great, because they were strong all week. I have to thank my teammates, I couldn’t have won without them. They went great. It was anything but easy, I finished all the stages tired and had to give everything, fighting for every second. The others in the race were really very strong. I think I’ll enjoy some rest now.”
The Norwegian will, in all likelihood, be one of the most represented riders of Uno-X Mobility next time Tour de France 2024which starts in less than two weeks from Florence.
