L’Marcell Jacobs’ Italy is queen of Europe. The Olympic and European 100 meter champion is engine of 4×100 light blue who won the last race of the continental event in Rome by a landslide, bringing the eleventh gold medal to the Azzurri, first in the medal table with 9 silvers and 4 bronzes (24 metals in total).
There the blue relay with Melluzzo, Jacobs, Patta and Tortu literally dominates the men’s 4×100winning with the excellent time of 37”82 (new European seasonal limit), leaving large gaps behind Holland and Germany.
Then the great celebration at the Olimpico with the four Italian musketeers who immediately went up to the grandstand to receive compliments from the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella.
«We all took to the track convinced that we could do something great. Italy is there and our athletics is there. Getting to the Olympics after a European Championship like this helps. Continue to follow us, we will do well”, Jacobs told Rai Sport.
“I am speechless. Truly a huge emotion. We were convinced we were doing well,” said Melluzzo. «We entered the track very excited. We wanted this victory and we took it,” added Jacobs. «They really wanted to win here in Rome, in front of this super audience», Patta pointed out. «I heard everything, a lot. There was so much noise and I couldn’t even hear Lorenzo (Patta, ed.). Everything went right for him. We wanted to win and we did it”, concluded Tortu. “We are really proud,” the Azzurri then reiterated in chorus.
