Fifth and penultimate day of the European Athletics Championships in Rome, which is giving Italy a lot of satisfaction. The evening gave other medals to Italy, which for the first time in the history of the European Athletics Championships could win the overall ranking.
A silver comes immediately in the 400 hs with Alessandro Sibilio beaten only by the Norwegian world record holder Warholm. With 47.50 Sibilio also sets the Italian record. Warholm wins with 46.98. Extraordinary race for the Italian who chases the Norwegian, who started off as usual with a bang from the first metres. And in the final he also manages to reduce the gap, also achieving the new national record, snatching it from Mori who held it with 47.54. «I hope to be an example for many kids who see me training every day on the field» underlines Sibilio at the end of the match.
Shortly afterwards the women’s 400 hs also started with Ayomide Folorunso came only fifth in the race won by Femke Bol with 52.49, a new championship record.
Subsequently Nadia Battocletti after the 5000 m he also won the 10,000 m with the new Italian record of 30.51.32. For her it is the second gold.
A new gold medal then comes from Gianmarco Tamberi who wins the race with 2.37. He was also present to watch this match at the Olimpico in Rome (like the others). the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella. At the presentation of the athletes of the Alto Tamberi final he bowed to Mattarella who replied with a warm greeting. «It is an immense honor, I shudder at the mere thought that the President is at the stadium – said Tamberi -. It could be the decisive leap that breaks the resistance of the Ukrainian Lavskyy. Which however he decides to jump for the last two times at 2.33. Gimbo begins and misses his first attempt. Lavskyy then makes a mistake and Tamberi again. He definitely misses the Ukrainian and Jimbo is golden. But he is not satisfied, he sets the bar at 2.34 and surpasses it. Then he does even better: 2.37 new championship record. Between the last two jumps a real show with Gimbo pretending to remove springs from his shoes. Then he kisses and hugs with friends and relatives.
The morning races
Larissa Iapichino she took to the track at 10.35, jumped first and immediately set the first distance needed to qualify. In short, the first jump of 6.71 was enough for the Italian to get through to tomorrow evening’s long-distance final. The same goes for the first relay that ran today: the men’s 4×400 made up of Brayan Lopez, Vladimir Aceti, Riccardo Meli, Edoardo Scotti with the second time of their heat they guaranteed themselves a place in the final. Also the women’s 4×400 — with the quartet made up of Ilaria Accame, Giancarla Trevisan, Rebecca Borga, Anna Polinari — she secured the final, despite finishing 5th in her heat, thanks to a 3:25.28 which became the second repechage time.
Late in the morning it was the turn of the 4×100. The men’s one, without Jacobs and Tortu, quickly closed the qualification process thanks to the quartet composed of Roberto Rigali, Matteo Melluzzo, Lorenzo Patta, Lorenzo Simonelli: second in their heat, the Italians of this relay gained access to the final with a time of 38.40. Different epilogue instead for the women’s 4×100: the time of 43.27 with which Irene Siragusa, Dalia Kaddari, Anna Bongiorni, Arianna De Masi they closed their heat and it wasn’t enough to secure the final (also thanks to a physical problem that affected and above all slowed down Kaddari in his fraction).
