“By 2026, adequate stadiums will be needed, otherwise the 2023 European Championship will be withdrawn from us” – this is the warning issued by the CEO of Serie A Luigi De Siervo, spoke on the sidelines of the Serie A Festival. The aforementioned event has been assigned to Italy and Turkey, who have the task of organizing it according to certain criteria. And the modernization of some systems is necessary in view of future checks by UEFA.
De Siervo and the stadium alarm: “We risk the European Championship”
“Our stadiums will have to be upgraded by the deadline of October 2026 otherwise there is a risk that that part of Euro 2032 will be withdrawn from us” – explained De Siervo. Then he continued: “It represents a challenge that we cannot afford to lose: it is the last call. In October 2026 UEFA will carry out its own checks and we will have to demonstrate that we have adapted the systems. This is the moment to demonstrate that we are a compact system. Infrastructure cannot be created just for large events, but always do it methodically. Many Serie B teams don’t invest in their stadiums – perhaps even out of good luck – and then when they are promoted to Serie A they create problems because they have to go and play their first matches in other facilities.” Statements which also follow those of the Minister of Sport in recent months during the round table for “Sports facilities and infrastructures: actors and processes – The experience of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympics”: “We continue to think that San Siro should host the 2032 European Championship matches, but currently it cannot do so” – he reiterated. And now the CEO of Serie A has put everyone on alert.
