The world of two wheels is characterized by numerous brands of extraordinary value and incredible level, capable of constantly challenging each other in the creation of truly phenomenal products and projects. In fact, within the two-wheel market, it is not uncommon to find more than one special means of transport destined to achieve truly fantastic results.
Sometimes, truly significant innovations can also be highlighted within it. These innovations are presented via patent and then, if all goes well, they take off in practice.
If this is true, however, so is the fact that things don’t always go exactly that great. This is demonstrated by the latest news linked to a major brand, which is now forced to stop and pay a millionaire fine.
Peugeot case, what a shock: here’s what happened
The dispute between Peugeot and Piaggio it has caused a lot of discussion in recent years, and now we have finally arrived at a definitive solution. The Court of Cassation in fact held the appeal brought forward by Peugeot Motorycles Sas and Peugeot Motorcycles Italia is inadmissible. The two affiliated companies contested the ruling which was made by the Court of Appeal of Milan on 16 January 2023 and which – in support of the Court of Milan – confirmed the violation of the Piaggio patent by the French company.
It is a story that practically begins in the spring of 2015, when Piaggio sues Peugeot and Yamaha for patent infringement concerning the technical architecture of the two-wheel tilting front end and the design of the MP3 vehicle. The request to withdraw the Peugeot Metropolis 400 from the market dates back to 27 October 2014. Subsequently, the Judiciary Court of Paris and the Ordinary Court of Milan have the French company condemned for counterfeiting a European patent related to the MP3 three-wheeled scooter technology.
The patent we are telling you about concerns the control of the system that allows a three-wheeled vehicle to tilt sideways like a traditional motorbike, solution that made MP3 famous all over the world. Now we come to the present day, with the compensation for the damage quantified at over one million euros. Peugeot’s appeal has now been definitively rejected, and therefore the violation of the French company is now certain, which in addition to financial compensation will not be able to export, import, market and advertise the Metropolis vehicle.
