With eyes turned to the sky and a look at the weather forecast apps, in the end the organizers were forced to move the finish line of the 12th edition of the Stelvio-Santini at 1,945 meters of Cancano lakes. Based on the indications of ANAS and all the local authorities, it was not possible to set up the traditional arrival at Stelvio Pass. “It will be for the next year – comments the patron of the event, Mario Zangrando –. There were no safety conditions for the participants: the risk of avalanches is too high and for us the protection of the cyclists taking part in the event remains primary.”
I am 1,500 the cyclists who participated this year in the Stelvio-Santini, which as usual started from the center of Bormio, 46 flags were ideally waving in this edition of an event that unites some of the most iconic climbs in cycling: 46 nations were in fact represented. The now consolidated format of the Valtellina test does not provide official rankings, but the competitors with the best sum of times used in the races are rewarded with specific jerseys timed climbs (Rogorbello, Mortirolo and Cancano Lakes). Simone Donghi (Asnaghi Cucine) and the Turkish one Yasemin Türe stood out on the medium route (102 kilometres, Mortirolo and Cancano), while the fastest on the short route (59 kilometres, with only the ascent to the Cancano Lakes) were Stefano Scala (Swatt Club) e Claudia Bertoncini (VC Forte dei Marmi).
