Roland Garros, everything you need to know

About fifteen Italians, 18 fields, all the champions present, new programming and structures. Yes: Roland Garros is ready. We’re finally here, the second Slam of the season begins on Sunday, the Major on clay which has its king in Rafael Nadal: Monday will be the big day of the challenge between the 14-time champion and Sascha Zverev (fresh winner of the Internazionali d’Italia) , inside the Stade Roland Garros there is nothing else to talk about. The cover is by Rafa, but under the bulky shadow of the Majorcan there is much more.

Bronzetti against Osaka

To see Nadal at work we will therefore have to wait until Monday, the same goes for Jannik Sinner: the blue will make his debut against Christopher Eubanks on the second day of the tournament. Here the most awaited man of Day 1 is Carlos Alcaraz: the Spaniard has not played since the defeat in the quarterfinals in Madrid against Andrey Rublev and will face JJ Wolf in the second match against Philippe Chatrier, after the match between Naomi Osaka and Lucia Bronzetti : there will therefore be the tricolor in the inaugural match on the most important pitch of the Stade Roland Garros, starting from 12pm Italian time. On Chatrier the start will be at midday every day, while on the other courses the program will start at 11am.

Italians

The other matches scheduled on the central court will be Lys-Garcia and – in the evening session, from 8.30pm – the vintage Wawrinka-Murray. Italy is also protagonist on Suzanne Lenglen with Lorenzo Sonego, who in the first match (therefore at 11am) will face the host Ugo Humbert, seeded number 17: followed by Ostapenko-Cristian, Gasquet-Coric (the winner could find Sinner in the second round) and Krejcikova-Colubic. Also watch out for the other courts: among our players there will also be Luca Nardi (third match on court 7 also in this case against a French player, Alexandre Muller) and Martina Trevisan, who in the fourth match on court 8 will challenge Olga Danilovic.

news and prize money

There will be several new features at this Roland Garros: the most important certainly concerns the roof on the Susanne Lenglen, which can therefore be covered (the process takes about 15 minutes) as already happens on the Philippe Chatrier. The evening sessions will increase: they will reach 11, therefore until May 15th. In total there will be over 38 thousand seats for spectators, a large turnout of the public is expected at the Stade Roland Garros. And the prize money rises: 53,478,000 euros in total, with an increase of 7.82% compared to 2023 and an important growth especially for the first rounds. Whoever leaves the tournament immediately will pocket 73 thousand euros, the winner 2,400,000, the finalist 1,200,000 and the semi-finalists 650 thousand. Roland Garros will be broadcast in Italy by Discovery+ and Eurosport. Off we go.
