This time Tadej Pogacar decided to limit yourself and to leave room for escape: a brave man arrives at the summit of the Brocon Pass in the seventeenth stage of the 2024 Giro d’Italia. A very deserved success for Georg Steinhauser (EF Education – EasyPost): the German born in 2001 finds his first career victory in the Corsa Rosa, of unique quality.

A truly non-stop day for the runners, right from kilometer zero. Shots and counter shots on the first GPM of the day, the Passo Sella, the new Cima Coppi of the race, on which Giulio Pellizzari managed to top the hill in front. Subsequently, the young Italian from VF Group – Bardiani CSF – Faizanè was joined by Nicola Conci (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Attila Valter (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), Davide Ballerini (Astana Qazaqstan Team), Georg Steinhauser (EF Education – EasyPost) , Marco Frigo (Israel – Premier Tech), Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier (Lidl – Trek), Nairo Quintana (Movistar Team), Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal Quick-Step) and Damiano Caruso (Bahrain – Victorious).

However, even today the group found a team that did not agree on the escape, the dsm-firmenich PostNL, which began to dictate the pace, practically going to catch the attackers in view of the Gobbera Pass. From then on there were still several movements in the platoon, which continued to have several changes in front only to then see yet another attack by Georg Steinhauser (EF Education-Easypost) and Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier (Lidl – Trek) on the first climb of the Brocon Pass.

The German managed to greet the Eritrean’s company by launching himself alone towards the grand finale, with the platoon lowering the pace, losing over 3′ from the pace. There Ineos Grenadiers he tried to make a desperate push in the last 5 kilometres, but there was nothing he could do to catch up with the fugitive, who went on to take a wonderful victory.

4 kilometers from the finish line, difficulties for Ben O’Connor and an increase in speed for Geraint Thomas: in the group of the best, however, it was the usual Tadej Pogacar, who however managed himselfsettling for second place. Third position of the day for an excellent Antonio Tiberiwho extends his Maglia Bianca key and gains seconds towards fourth place, then Thomas and Martinez, the very favorites for the final podium.
