Adrian Newey leaves Red Bull. All that is missing is the statement from the Milton Keynes team to establish the sensational separation between the brilliant aerodynamicist who designed some of the most successful cars in the history of F1 and the team that he himself led to the conquest of 7 drivers’ titles and 6 constructors’ titles between 2006 and 2023. The official announcement of the end of a union that seemed indissoluble, as well as profitable, should arrive in the next few hours, probably on the eve of the Miami GP scheduled for the weekend: Newey himself would have already submitted his resignation to the team, with which, however, the methods, times and conditions of the end of the relationship must be defined. Thanks to the single-seaters designed by Newey, Red Bull has collected 117 GP victories so far, including that of two Sundays ago in Shanghai, in the Chinese GP. Ferrari is up there with 244 successes, ahead of McLaren’s 183 and Mercedes’ 125.

Newey is famous for never quite liking the idea of moving away from England and that’s also why the split hit. Certainly the explosive climate of the last few months within Red Bull has not favored the desire to continue. The case of the internal investigation into Christian Horner, accused of “inappropriate behavior” towards an employee, was resolved in favor of the team principal, who was cleared of the charges. But it revealed a fierce conflict between the most representative parts of the team, from the top to the most media-focused men, the super consultant Helmut Marko and the Verstappen clan included, who sided against Horner. A difficult climate, even more so for a leading coach like Newey, who has been described as disgusted by the situation and inevitably by the consequent polemical aftermath.
