Vos lightning in the third stage of the Vuelta Femenina 2024! The captain of Visma Lease a Bike, who was unable to sprint yesterday because she was held back by the fall, made no mistakes today and at the finish line in Teruel she clearly preceded her compatriot Charlotte Kool (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL) and the Canadian Olivia Baril (Movistar Team). Immediately down from the stage podium was Ingvild Gåskjenn (Liv AlUla Jayco), fifth was Lily Williams (Human Powered Health), sixth was twenty-year-old Flora Perkins (Fenix-Deceuninck) and seventh was her peer Eleonora Ciabocco (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL).
THE STAGE Orphan of Anna Henderson, Sabrina Stultiens, Clara Emond and Marta Cavalli – who did not feel well during the night and therefore, as a precaution, decided not to show up at the start so as not to compromise the next seasonal objectives – the third stage of the Vuelta Femenina took the moves from Lucena del Cid with 140 athletes at the start.
After a dozen kilometers of racing, Mireia Benito of AG Insurance – Soudal Team broke away from the peloton and took the lead solo; a group with Bredewold, Chapman, Kraak, Kastelijn, de Jong and van Agt, fourth in the general classification, tried to get back on the pace but failed.
Benito continued his action and won the GPM of Alto Fuente de Rubielos where she passed with a 4’35” lead on the group led by the leader of the climbers Karlijn Swinkels (UAE Team ADQ) with Thalita de Jong (Lotto Dstny Ladies) close behind.
The escapee of the day also made it her own the Flying Finish Line by Mora de Rubielos; in second place came Grace Brown (FDJ – SUEZ) and in third place Blanka Vas (SD Worx-Protime) who earned a couple of seconds bonus.
34 kilometers from the finish line Demi Vollering (Team SD Worx – Protime) attempted an attack being immediately stopped by Elisa Longo Borghini (Lidl Trek), this move gave energy to the group which increased the pace.
Engaged in her escape for more than 100 kilometers Benito it lost its brilliance and, also held back by the headwind, it was radded by platoon to 7 kilometers from the goal line.
The sprinters’ teams worked on the approach to Teruel: Visma Lease a Bike, Team dsm-firmenich PostNL, Lidl Trek and Human Powered Health but what upset the plans of many teams was a fall at – 3 km. The sprint was launched by Diane Lippert (Movistar) who involuntarily acted as a support point for Vos who appeared at the finish line with her arms raised.
