A mysterious theft has shaken the WTA in Madrid, a tournament taking place on the clay courts of the Iberian capital.
The Russian tennis player Maria Timofeevacurrently ranked 99th in the WTA rankings, hsuffered the subtraction of approximately 10 thousand euros from his bank account while he was in Madrid to participate in the prestigious WTA 1000 tournament.
It all happened during the tournament qualifiers. After her first round win against Fiona Ferro, the Russian was defeated by Harriet Dart in the next match. This event, already very disappointing in itself, was further aggravated by the theft of her money.
Timofeeva expressed everything his astonishment regarding the theft given that, according to what the young tennis player said, her debit card was well kept. In a video shared on Instagram, she said: “I am going crazy because I don’t know how it happened: physically my card was with me most of the time, except for a few hours one morning when I left it in my room while it was being cleaned by the hotel maids“.
