Two years ago Paula Badosa was on the verge of becoming world number 2, her best ranking in the WTA rankings. Today the Spanish tennis player doesn’t know how long she will be able to continue playing at high levels. Her injuries are tormenting her, forcing her to withdraw from several tournaments. The latest retirement came at the WTA 500 in Stuttgart, halfway through the third set against Aryna Sabalenka. Badosa left the pitch in tears, consoled by her friend and rival. In an episode of the WTA Insider Podcast, the Spaniard spoke about her uncertainty about the future: “In mid-March, the doctors told me that it is complicated to continue my career. After I begged them to give me a solution, they advised me to take regular cortisone injections. They told me it’s the only solution if I want to continue for a few years. I told him I’m only 26, it was hard. The injections work, even if the pain is there and there are times I can’t stand it“.

“I fight every day for the love of this sport”

Badosa has managed to get back up many times, not only from injuries but also from the depression suffered at the beginning of her career. “I think what keeps me fighting every day is the love I have for this sport“, continued the tennis player, “I have always had the goal of being one of the best in the world, winning tournaments and facing great opponents. For me it would be fantastic to be able to play another three or four years. I have lived so many experiences, even from a mental point of view. Now I have a new injury that I never expected to suffer. It’s not easy being at the top and now at the bottom again, trying to climb back up once again“.
