Virtus Bologna’s Euroleague ends. Baskonia goes to the quarter-finals
Descriptive text here

Virtus Segafredo Bologna is eliminated from the 2023-2024 Euroleague. Baskonia, at the Fernando Buesa Arena in Vitoria, eliminates the men of Luca Banchi with the score of 89-77 in the second round of the play-in. They will therefore be the players guided by Dusko Ivanovich to challenge Real Madrid in the quarter-finals starting on Tuesday 23rd. Markus Howard’s performance was amazing with 28 points, but also Matt Costello with 19 he holds his own. For Bologna 16th of Tornike Shengelia and 13 of Daniel Hackettas well as 10 in cohabitation of Isaia Cordinier, Iffe Lundberg and Marco Belinelli. The very remarkable 16/39 from three from the hosts applies to everyone, with 8/19 only from Howard.

More than the baskets, the first moments are characterized by an excessive use of instant replay (two occasions in three minutes). The Juventus protagonist is Belinelli, who alone keeps the Black Vs afloat in the first 5 minutes (11-10). Indeed, the match is actually Baskonia-Belinelli. The first different player from Virtus to score is Shengelia, while on the other side first Sedekerskis and then Howard are the men who launch the Vitoria club towards a constant, small, but certain advantage. The last word, however, comes from Lundberg in penetration: ball dancing on the rim and then 21-22 after 10′.

The restart looks more like a Costello-Lundberg duel, temporarily won by the latter 26-29 in favor of Virtus. The problem is that Rogkavopoulos also enters the scene for Baskonia, who helps the hosts get up to +4 (33-29). Once again the Segafredo reaction is there, and it bears the signature of the Hackett-Abass pairing who, from one three and the other with enthusiasm above the rim, manage to bring the guests back ahead. The match was extremely hot, with a triple from Howard and a response from two from Lundberg which all lead to the break at 41-41.

Shengelia comes out of the locker room well with the Juventus +2, but it is the prelude to a partial that splits the match in two by Baskonia. Miller-McIntyre, Howard and Rogkavopoulos hit in every way allowed by basketball: entry, transition, tap in, triple, everything serves to bend the black Vs. Kotsar also enters the scene together with them and the gap reaches 16 points (60-47) with Howard still at three points. Shengelia and Zizic try with a partial score of 0-5, but Baskonia manages to keep the situation under control, closes the quarter with a run of 31-16 and enters the remaining 10 minutes at 72-57.

Bologna does what it can to try to put the situation back on its feet: above all from the arc Polonara, Mickey and Hackett try, but the Basques respond with rather similar coins and the excellent coordination between Howard, Costello and then also Sedekerskis (85- 70 with 5′ to go). The hosts, at this point, can manage with substantial peace of mind even if Segafredo fights until almost the end to try to reverse a path that seems to have been established. It ends 89-77, it will be Real Madrid-Baskonia and for the Italian clubs the Euroleague ends here.
