Silent scene at the oral exam of the final exam in protest. Linda Conchetto, Virginia Gonzales y Herrera and Lucrezia Novello decided to strike, even risking failure, in the name of what they themselves defined as a battle of principle against the “unfair” judgment given to their version of Greek in the second written test. The three students of the Foscarini high school in Venice, despite their rebellion against the final exam commission, were promoted with final grades between 71/100 and 67/100. The three young women carried out a protest on behalf of all their classmates: 10 candidates out of 14 in fact received serious failures from the external commissioner from a school in Mestre.

The protest: “I do not accept your judgment”

Linda, a model student who got a 6.5 in the Greek version (her annual average was 8), was the first to protest, making a silent scene. Instead of answering the commission’s questions, he read them a note in which he explained his action: “I have decided that I will not submit to the oral exam, certainly not because I am afraid of it or because I have not studied, but because I do not want accept your judgment which does not reflect my work”. Her companions Virginia and Lucrezia then followed her example.

Public opinion divided

The gesture of the three girls divided public opinion. The class group supported and supported them but there was no shortage of controversy on social media from those who accused the students of “lack of respect”. Strong condemnation was also expressed by Elena Donazzan, education councilor of the Veneto region. “This disobedience must be punished,” said Donazzan. “It is a provocation and a lack of respect towards teachers and the school institution: by doing so they demonstrate that they are not truly mature.” However, in the absence of official reports, the the regional school office did not initiate any proceedings.

Donazzan: “Serious act of disobedience”

The girls’ gesture risked leading to failure as an extreme consequence. Until yesterday, promotion was not a given, but today it came. Linda Conchetto graduated from high school with a grade of 71, Virginia Gonzales y Herrera with a grade of 65, Lucrezia Novello with a grade of 67. “Promoted even though they remained silent during the oral exam? They had obviously done their sums well, which means they don’t even have the courage to risk it,” Donazzan insisted, quoted by Corriere del Veneto. “If many of the students in the class got a bad grade in the Greek version,” she added, “it means they didn’t study or weren’t prepared well enough and didn’t reach the expected sufficient levels. There may have been a problem with the teaching, but when you enter the adult world you are also evaluated on the behavioral front, and I define this as a very serious act of disobedience.”
