Florence, 25 June 2024 – “When I returned I found a thief in the house”, said the 17-year-old with a passion for boxing who he found the lifeless body of the grandmotherthe 65 year old Peruvian Maria Teresa Chevez Flores. Almost a mother for him: the young man, who will come of age next December, was in fact in Italy with a regular assignment to the “abuela”. But his position, made up of a shaky reconstruction, is in the balance. So much so that in the evening the juvenile prosecutor Giuseppina Mione also arrived at the police station. The police are convinced that in the rent-controlled houses on Via Niccolò da Tolentino, on the night between Sunday and Monday, the one in which in Florence wild flowers are placed in the water of San Giovanni in view of the arrival of the Patron Saint’s Day, has been consumed a femicide. Maria Teresa and her husband, a Latin American singer, had moved to Italy although most of their loved ones remained in Lima. But she often came home, like last Christmas. In via Niccolò da Tolentino there is mistrust after the incident. The woman’s apartment is located on the first floor of a labyrinthine building, steep stairs, white grates, and green doors, all the same. The truth seems barricaded inside her just like her tenants, double-locked in their homes, who hardly let her get close.
“I woke up because I heard banging everywhere – says a gentleman from the door next to the woman – I heard the boy, who I don’t know, shouting, he knocked on my door several times asking for help, telling them to call the police, but I didn’t open the door, I was scared.”
A normal family, apparently suspicious, who lived in that building, socializing little, a bit like everyone else. “I didn’t know her personally, I always saw her passing by – says a lady on the first floor – she was always dressed and combed well, she looked like a queen. He was a shy boy but was quite kind to me”.
For many it was a night like any other, no strange noises, nothing abnormal, just some noise around two in the morning, “but it happens often here, it’s not a strange thing” confesses a lady as she quickly closes the front door.
