“Large hail and winds of up to 100 km/h in the evening”

The scenario hypothesized yesterday is -unfortunately- confirmed today. And so the civil protection of the Lombardy Region has issued a new weather alert for the next few hours, also raising the risk levels for the evening between Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd June”

“The transit of a depression wave from West to East over the region during the second part of today will lead to a marked increase in atmospheric instability with the formation of showers and thunderstorms, even of strong intensity” they explain from the functional monitoring center of natural risks.

In details “from the afternoon a progressive increase in instability is expected starting from the West with scattered showers and thunderstorms across the Alps and Pre-Alps; Local involvement of the high plain areas is also possible, while the phenomena in the lowland and Apennines areas remain unlikely and at most isolated. The highest and most extensive level of thunderstorm danger is concentrated between late afternoon and early evening (from approximately 5pm to 10pm), in particular regarding the possibility of large hail and strong gusts of wind (possible up to 80 – 100 km/h). Phenomena generally exhaustion by late evening. In the Alpine and pre-Alpine areas, repeated storm passages, or the possible stationarity and persistence of some storm cells in very limited areas, could lead to possible local accumulations of up to 80-100 millimetres”.

In this context, for the entire area of the province of Varese and also for that of Milan, an orange alert – i.e. of moderate criticality – is triggered at 2pm for the risk of strong thunderstorms which will remain in force until midnight. Also alert for the risk of hydrogeological disruptions (but at yellow level, i.e. ordinary) which will remain active until dawn on Saturday.

A baptism of summer which however should give way to better weather over the weekend. “For Saturday 22nd, mostly stable conditions in the first part of the day with low probability of precipitation. From the afternoon and especially in the evening, new rainfall is likely, generally weak, possible across the entire region, but more insistent in the Alpine and pre-Alpine areas. From mid-afternoon to early evening, some thundershowers will be possible with local strengthening of the wind”.

Spain also gives us a wet weekend: rain and thunderstorms throughout the province of Varese
