One of the two 16-year-old prisoners who escaped from the Beccaria prison in Milan has been traced: the hunt is on for the other young man on the run

He was tracked down by the police at around 2.30 am, at the train station Garbagnate Milaneseone of the two 16-year-old prisoners who escaped from prison yesterday afternoon“Cesare Beccaria” Penal Institute for Juveniles in Milan. He makes it known Gennarino De Faziogeneral secretary of the Uilpa Penitentiary Police, specifying that they are instead “the search for the other fugitive is still underwaybut we are optimistic.”

The 16-year-old Italian was identified and stopped by the police in the central Garbagnate Milanese train station, on board a train headed to Milan Cadorna. During the arrest, the young man resisted and behaved violently, which is why he was arrested for resisting a public official and reported free for escape. After being blocked, the 16-year-old was taken to the San Carlo hospital in Milan as he complained of chest pain. Subsequently, he was taken back to Beccaria where he will continue to serve his sentence. The circumstances of his capture and subsequent transfer were confirmed by the Carabinieri of the Milan provincial command.

The affair has reignited the debate on management of juvenile prisons in Italy and on the need for structural and organizational interventions to improve safety conditions and recovery possibilities for young prisoners. De Fazio underlined that, despite the rapid intervention to capture the young escapee, the general situation of prisons in Italy remains worrying: “We cannot express the same optimism about the fate of prisons, for minors and adults, which continue to be abandoned to themselves”, he stated, then criticizing the silence of the Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, after similar episodes, defining it as “singular”.
