Italians are deserting the polls in the 2024 European elections, the first elections in the history of the Republic in which less than 50% of voters, 49.69% to be precise, despite the entry into the field of many party leaders. Taking into consideration only the voters and looking not at the absolute votes but at the percentages, the three government parties see their numbers strengthened, which together bring them close to 48%; with a clear leadership of Fdi, whose score stands at over 28%. Elly Schlein’s PD was also rewarded, growing compared to the policies both in terms of absolute votes and percentages (24%), as was Avs which climbed to 6.6%.

The M5s result is “disappointing”, as Giuseppe Conte admitted, falling below the 10% threshold. The entry into the field of many leaders (Meloni, Tajani, Schlein) and the radical tone of the campaign of some parties did not convince voters to go to the polls. The 49.69% turnout is lower than both the 63.9% of the September 2022 elections and the 56.09% of 2019. And this despite the vote in 3,700 municipalities and in Piedmont which raised participation. In fact, the highest participation is recorded in the North West constituency, with 55.09%, while the lowest is in the South (48.32%) and in the Islands (37.20%), i.e. the “constituency” of M5s, which collapses to 9.95%, when the seats counted are 59,993 out of 61,650.

Giorgia Meloni smiles: Fdi, despite losing 800 thousand votes compared to the policies, stands at 28.8%, with a delegation of more than 20 MEPs, among the strongest ever in Strasbourg. Well, in terms of percentages, the junior partners, Fi and Lega, with the former overtaking: 9.72% for Tajani’s party, 9.12% for Salvini and Vannacci’s. The three parties together are close to 48% which allows Meloni to underline that at the next G7 the Italian government is the stronger one, compared to the battered executives of Germany, France and the United Kingdom. The vote polarized the two sides, given that even among the opposition the Democratic Party is largely the first party with over 24% and over 100 thousand votes more than in the political elections. A success for Schlein who reiterated his “united spirit” to guide the birth of a competitive coalition with the centre-right. The axis has shifted to the left thanks to the exploit of Avs, which goes from one million votes in 2022 to one and a half million yesterday, a percentage of 6.6%. Broken bones for the reformist area: neither the United States of Europe (3.75%) nor Action (3.31%) exceed the 4% threshold necessary to send elected officials to Strasbourg.
