An extra day of work for the workaholics

In practice, one worker in ten is employed around one day more per week than the others, considering that the standard working time in many cases varies between 36 and 40 hours. In Italy, employees employed at least 49 hours a week are on average 3.8% (3.6% in the EU), while self-employed workers with employees who work these hours are 46% of the total (41.7 % the EU average).

Self-employment and working hours

The self-employed without employees who work 49 hours a week are 27.4% (23.6% in the EU), while those engaged in a job helping the family business who reach 49 hours are 20.1% ( 14% in the EU). The percentage of “workaholic” rises if we consider only men, with 12.9% of employed people working at least 49 hours a week (9.9% in the EU). Among the self-employed with employees, the percentage exceeds 50% in Italy (50.8%) and stands at 46.3% in the EU.

More working hours for men

iEven among employees, the percentage of those who work at least 49 hours a week increases among men, with 5.1% in Italy compared to the 5% of the EU average. Among women, self-employed women with employees work long hours in 32.5% of cases (almost one in three) compared to 29.6% in the EU. Among employees, however, they are 2.3% compared to 2.1% in the EU. Overall, women who work at least 49 hours a week are 5.1% of the total compared to 3.8% in the EU.

More engaged executives

In Italy, managers especially have long hours (40.5% of the total compared to 21.9% in the EU) with a percentage of 24.4% for employed managers (14.3% in the EU). 10.3% of professionals in Italy declare they work at least 49 hours and 10.9% of service and sales workers (6.5% in the EU). Among agricultural workers in Italy, 36.3% work at least 49 hours a week (we are at 27.5% in the EU).
