Bonus for hiring young people, women and disadvantaged workers, with relief for two years. And an allowance of 100 euros next January for employees with incomes of up to 28 thousand euros.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, together with half of the government, presents the upcoming news on work and taxes to the unions, which will go to the Council of Ministers on the eve of Labor Day. Putting something new on the table May 1st decree – as already renamed – after the rules on inclusion were approved last year on that date, with the farewell to Citizenship Income, on the reasons for fixed-term contracts and on the cut of the tax wedge by up to 7 points.

Now the new measures are contained in the Cohesion decree, which reforms the relevant policies on the matter, and in a legislative decree, as part of the implementation of the fiscal delegation, examined by the Council of Ministers on Tuesday. The objective, as highlighted by Meloni at the table with the unions, is to continue to support employment growth, the reduction of unemployment and the inactive, i.e. those who do not have a job and are not even looking for one, to bring them back in the market. And also to defend the purchasing power of families and workers, “especially those most exposed”. In particular, for work, measures are arriving to support the employment of young people, women and some categories of disadvantaged workers: with the reduction of social security contributions for new hires for two years. Alongside these, ad hoc provisions are envisaged to encourage the launch of new distinct activities for the Centre-North and the South, explains the Prime Minister. Furthermore, “actions to retrain” the workers of large companies in crisis are being made to encourage the intersection of job supply and demand.

On the tax front, an allowance of 100 euros will be paid in January 2025 for employees with a total income of no more than 28 thousand euros with a spouse and at least one dependent child., or for single-parent families with a single dependent child. Some have already defined it as the “Befana bonus”. With the Cohesion decree the government aims to accelerate the implementation of cohesion policies which provide 75 billion euros for Italy, of which 43 billion of European resources. European funds that are allocated to the country every seven years. And which must be spent, allocating it to labour, social and business support policies.

Shortly before the discussion with the trade unions in view of May 1st, again at Palazzo Chigi, the Prime Minister and a government delegation met with CGIL, CISL and UIL and the European and International Confederation of Trade Unions for a consultation in view of the summit G7, scheduled in Puglia from 13 to 15 June. As usual, Labour7, the format that brings together the trade union organizations of the G7 nations and the EU, participates in the work by making recommendations to leaders and labor ministers and presenting the priorities of the agenda: an agenda that aims – we read in the declaration – to growth in green, quality employment, job security and wages. Present at the meetings were the general secretaries of CISL and UIL, Luigi Sbarra and Pierpaolo Bombardieri, for the CGIL the confederal secretaries – not Maurizio Landini in Palermo for an assembly against the mafia. Meanwhile on Wednesday, CGIL, CISL and UIL are preparing to celebrate May 1st under the slogan “Let’s build together a Europe of peace, work and social justice”, which will see them first in Monfalcone (Gorizia) for the traditional demonstration and then in Rome for the concert that debuts at the Circus Maximus.
