On June 26th Antonio “Stash” Fiordispino (33 years old) and his companions will be in concert at the Cavea. How did it go with Fiore?
“He’s a friend. We explained the idea to him: to recreate his “Karaoke”. In the text we mention some iconic objects of the 90s: a model of shoe that was in vogue at the time, the Game Boy. We wanted to pay homage to a cult program of the time, like his. He immediately told us yes: when we filmed it he was in the days of the last episodes of Viva Rai2 ».
Has he opened up to you about his upcoming TV projects?
«No, we haven’t talked about it. You told us what we already knew, that is, that there would not be another season of Viva Rai2!. Stop”.
What is the Karma of the Kolors?
«Positive karma (laughs). Italodisco marked a new beginning in our journey: there is a before and an after that song.”
Have you been born again?
«We have never felt dead, artistically speaking. But we encountered some difficulties. We started from scratch after many disappointments and moments of discouragement. Suffice it to say that when we published Pensare male in 2019, in a duet with Elodie, we were the only ones who believed in that piece. Even the record companies at the time didn’t bet on it: in the end it won a platinum record.”
Have you understood what the formula for success is?
«Yes: sincerity. Intention counts. In our case, even a pinch of healthy presumption made the difference, the desire to succeed without compromising with the trends of the moment.”
Coming from someone who now dominates the catchphrase championship, it is not convincing. Is there really nothing built?
“Nothing. We play in the pop championship, but with our own rules. We mention the sounds and aesthetic imagery of the bands that have left their mark on us. Alex, my cousin (he plays drums in the band, ed.) and I and I are the sons of two brothers who played in various bands in Naples in the 70s and 80s. In Karma, instead of touching the world of Italodisco’s straight bass drum, we look at the part of the 80s that we call the “shoulder pads”, from A-Ha to Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark and their Enola Gay. When we left Amici with Everytime, for many we were the ones who sang the song from the Vodafone commercial: few perceived the references to rock bands like Two Door Cinema Club. And on the next album, You, there were the former Oasis Gem Archer and Andy Bell, not exactly the latest arrivals.”
What didn’t work in Sanremo?
«We didn’t present ourselves with the classic Sanremo song, but with a piece that aimed to consolidate The Kolors sound. We took revenge on our placement after the Festival.”
Will you return in 2025?
«If we have the right song».
What are The Kolors missing? International success?
“Yes. After Amici, the American managers of Live Nation (American live music giant, ed.) wanted to bring us to the USA. But we were still busy consecrating ourselves here in Italy: we weren’t ready. We would love to play Coachella or Glastonbury one day. In the meantime, we are preparing for the European tour which will start with the concert in Rome: we will visit Switzerland, Poland, Germany, Lithuania, Slovenia, Belgium.”
