After the good results of Sony’s Spider-Mondays initiative, thanks to which all eight live-action Spider-Man films returned to theaters in the United States, Warner Bros has brought it back to the cinema with Fathom Events the three films of The Lord of the Rings in extended version by Peter Jackson: According to the schedule, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was brought back to theaters on June 8 and returned for a second screening on June 14; The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers was re-released on June 9, followed by a second round on June 15; finally The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King was republished on June 10th and then on June 16th.
Until now, the three films generated a combined total of just over $7.2 million, but this overall very good figure (for films released over twenty years ago and available anywhere between streaming and home video) may grow further, given that the films will return for one day every next weekend. In detail, The Fellowship of the Ring grossed $2.4 million on the first day of reprinting and about 600 thousand dollars on the second day; The Two Towers earned $1.9 million the first day and about 500 thousand dollars the second; Return of the King grossed $1.7 million on the first day, but data from the second day is still awaited.
Directed by Peter Jackson, the Lord of the Rings films were released between 2001 and 2003 and grossed a total of almost 3 billion dollars worldwide. They have been re-released on several occasions previously, and in total they won 17 Oscars out of 30 nominations while Return of the King won in each of 11 categories for which it was nominated, an absolute record shared with Ben-Hur and Titanic.
