“They deserve a little more appreciation”

After comments about superheroes made previously by directors like Martin Scorsese, Chris Hemsworth has reignited the topic and defended the genre.

In recent years several directors such as Martin Scorsese And Quentin Tarantino have openly shared their point of view regarding superhero movies. After some time, Chris Hemsworth he revisited the topic by defending a genre to which he owes his career today. In fact, many would hardly forget his red thunder god cloak worn in the films of Thor. Although today he increasingly cultivates his career by spanning film genres, Chris Hemsworth owes his fortune to the Marvel universe and is aware of it.

Chris Hemsworth echoes comments from directors who have criticized Marvel films

Not long ago, Martin Scorsese admitted that he couldn’t watch superhero movies, which he said were “not cinema.” “The closest thing they remind me of, however well made with actors doing their best under the circumstances, are theme parks”. Also Francis Ford Coppola joined the conversation, commenting:

When Martin Scorsese says that Marvel films are not cinema, he is right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to get something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration. I don’t know if anyone gets anything out of seeing the same film over and over again… Martin was kind when he said it’s not cinema.

To the microphones of The TimesChris Hemsworth expressed his opinion on the matter, reporting both comments from the two aforementioned directors.

Those people also made movies that didn’t work. It happened to everyone. When they talked about what was wrong with superheroes, I thought, ‘Why don’t you tell that to the billions of people who watch them? Were they all wrong?’ Going to the movies hasn’t changed because of superheroes, but because of smartphones and social media. In reality, it was superhero films that encouraged people to go to the cinema during that transition phase. So they deserve a little more appreciation.

At the moment Chris Hemsworth would have hung up his hammer, but he hasn’t ruled out a Thor return. In the meantime he has concentrated above all on his role antagonist in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, a career-first role he needed. Regarding the comments of Marvel actors who have in turn criticized the films in which they took part, the actor added:

It’s like saying: ‘These are successful films, I want to be part of them.’ Then, if they don’t work, they throw mud. I grew up with a soap opera. And it bothered me when actors later talked about the show with guilt or shame. Humility goes a long way. One of the more mature actors on Home and Away once said: ‘We don’t get paid to make the good lines sound good, but to make the bad ones work.’ He left an impression on me. It’s a lesson. And if I ever returned to Thor, I would ask myself how we could propose a new story. It’s kind of true that there’s the curse of the superhero in the sense that you get pigeonholed and I felt a little limited by what I could do, so I desperately wanted something that would scare the shit out of me. And it happened with Furiosa.
