Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes premieres on the weekend of May 9-12

Last weekend, we told about the event I’ll be with you allowed the damage to be moderated compared to last year. At the risk of being repetitive, in this case too it was an event that made the weekend more acceptable.

Unfortunately this does not mean that we are at 2023 levels, suffice it to say that both Saturday (down 27% compared to 2023) and Sunday (even -40%) only Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes it grossed more than 200,000 euros (very little for holidays, but clearly the good weather led the public to choose other options other than the cinema). In fact, this weekend saw a total taking of 4,165,679 euros, when instead in the weekend of 11-14 May 2023 we were at 5,169,802 euros (therefore, a decrease of 19.4%), thanks to the second weekend of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3which was still worth 2,453,543 euros.

And it goes without saying that in the pre-pandemic period things were decidedly better. The weekend of 9-12 May 2019 was in fact worth 7,075,449 euros, thanks to the very strong debut of Pokemon Detective Pikachu from 2,415,494 euros, but without absolutely neglecting the contribution of the third weekend of Avengers: Endgame, which was worth 1,361,847 euros. Definitely less strong (but still higher than similar data) the weekend of 10-13 May 2018, with a collection of 4,970,576 euros, thanks to two titles above one million, Avengers: Infinity War from 1,165,828 euros and the debut of The 2 of them from 1,101,110 euros.

All this leads to reporting an important and not very pleasant trend at the box office. Not even so slowly, the distance between the 2024 and 2023 collections is narrowing, so much so that at the moment on one hand we have a total collection of 178,843,958 euros this year compared to 165,730,880 euros last year. The impression is that 2023 could be overtaken in June, which obviously can onlywiden‘ in the following months, considering the very rich summer offer of a year ago.

And we come to the first in the ranking, that is Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which obtains a significant result, but honestly (even considering the good debut overseas) we could have hoped for something better. The film just exceeded one million (to be precise, 1,118,598 euros) and only considering the data of the debut on Wednesday, while for the four days it earned 961,934 euros and an average of 2,141 euros in 441 cinemas .

It is certainly useful to make a comparison with previous episodes. The War – Planet of the Apes was released on 13 July 2017, obtaining 1,176,672 euros over the four-day weekend, for a final total of €3,713,555. Apes Revolution: Planet of the Apes instead it arrived on 30 July 2014, grossing 1,970,457 euros in the first long weekend (Wed-Sun). At the end of its run, it had reached 4,863,569 euros. In short, it is clear that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes it will not be able to provide extraordinary revenue and already reaching three million in total will not be easy.

And let’s get to this weekend’s event, that is Liberato’s secret, which after having started very strongly on its debut on May 9th, nevertheless continued at good levels, reaching 661,479 euros over the weekend and an average of 2,297 euros (the best of the top ten) in 288 cinemas, for a total (including previews on Wednesday) of 685,106 euros. It being understood that it is not easy to find products of this type, either I’ll be with you That Liberato’s secret they demonstrate that some events do not necessarily have to be limited to the usual Monday-Wednesday exploitation and that we can work on them in detail.

Third position for another new release and considering that the expectations for horror The prophecy of evil they weren’t huge, there’s no need to complain about the result, 430,787 euros and an average of 1,696 in 254 cinemas. It is now aiming for a total of 4 million (it has reached 3,623,761 euros) Challengersthanks to a further collection of 346,061 euros (-56%) and an average of 930.

More worrying (given that it arrives in the second weekend) is the drop (-58%) in The Fall Guy which clearly did not capture the Italian public, winning another 281,419 euros and an average of 813, for a total so far of 1,629,440 euros.

Given the lack of other family titles, one could have hoped for a better decline for Garfield – A tasty missionwhich lost 58% with another 265,750 euros collected and is at a total of 1,616,429 euros.

It should be noted, however, that the event could aim to enter the top ten highest Italian box office grosses of 2024 I’ll be with you, which has now reached 1,280,337 euros, with this last weekend worth 250,082 euros (-68%). The film to beat is Romeo and Juliet with 1,455,741 euros.

Similar decline (-65%) but not surprising for Confidencewhich had already given signals in this sense, and which now takes home another 100,821 euros (average of 389) and reaches a total of 1,570,161 euros.

Two other new releases close the top ten. The taste of thingswhich removed the position of official French candidate for the Oscars from ad Anatomy of a fallobtained 144,940 euros and an average of 947 in 153 cinemas. Mother’s Instinct instead it is tenth with 101,175 euros and an average of 406 in 249 cinemas. Of course, it is impressive that 100,000 euros are now enough to enter the top ten of the weekend.

And we close with the totals of some titles, such as Mischief at homewhich reached 1,147,456 euros; Civil Warwhich reaches 1,768,219 euros; A world apart (6,964,092 euros); Anselm (341,080 euros); Back to Black (2,191,818 euros), Six brothers (259,870 euros); And Ghostbusters – Glacial Menace (2,767,586 euros).
