Albenga. The mayor of Albenga Riccardo Tomatis spoke about the “noise” caused by exponents of the centre-right for a post from the civic list Together for the future.

“I want to dedicate a few words to a bit of political confusion that arose following the innocent post ‘The Enemy at the Gates’ by Together for the Future – Tomatis Mayor, – began the mayor. – Who would have thought that a simple movie quote could cause such a stir?”.

“The regional majority and its local representatives seem to have taken everything a little too seriously, accusing the Ingauno PD even of attacking democratic institutions and of having similarities with violent extra-parliamentary fringes (what does the PD have to do with it, then? Together for the Future is a civic list where there are only 4 Dem candidates). But, really, what’s so threatening about a movie title?” he continued.

“Let’s go step by step. According to political scientist and philosopher Ostow, an ‘enemy’ is simply an individual or group perceived as strongly adverse or threatening. Therefore, if Albenga feels the regional majority is ‘strongly opposed’, technically and politically it is correct to define it as he did Together for the Future. Right? And then, what does the Province have to do with all this? Does Together for the Future sit on the Provincial Council? No,” he added again.

“The provincial institutions, on the other hand, are ‘almost zen’ in trying not to create children and stepchildren between municipalities based on political color. But the majority in the Region, alas, does not seem to be on the same wavelength and treats Albenga with an ‘affectionate hostility’ that is perplexing. And what about the local representatives of the right? Ready to defend their regional parties, rather than their own city. What magnanimous hearts. And then they accuse us of running unfair campaigns. Irony of politics, don’t you think?”.

Then, on the title of the film and the post itself, Tomatis continued: “The Enemy at the Gates is a romantic story transplanted onto that of a Nazi sniper and his intense enmity towards a Soviet soldier – who, in the end, defeats him . It is an American film about the Second World War. Don’t worry, on the right: I know for a fact that it’s just a metaphorical joke.”

“Unless someone identifies too much with the Nazi sniper, but that’s another story.

In short, take it more calmly and, if you really have to take an extreme position, do it at the cinema. Lastly, I was struck by the speed of the response of the regional majority and its local representatives. It’s a shame that, when we asked for help for healthcare, the reaction wasn’t so quick, in fact, there never was”, concluded Tomatis.
